Bugle Staff

Park Ridge police have arrested three juveniles in connection to a string of motor vehicle thefts that occurred between Feb. 21 and March 7.

The Park Ridge Police Department announced last week that charges ranging from possession of stolen motor vehicle to fleeing police have been filed against three 14-year-olds from Park Ridge and Buffalo Grove.

Three of the vehicles taken were running at the time, and the fourth vehicle had the keys left in the ignition, according to police.

“It is important to note that all of these crimes were crimes of opportunity,” Deputy Chief Lou Jogmen said in a March 16 release. “Please lock your vehicles each time you park it and never leave the keys inside.”

The first reported theft occurred Feb. 21 in the 100 block of Euclid Avenue. Police said one of the suspects, who is identified as Juvenile A, stole a 2012 Honda that was left unattended with its engine running. Suspect A is alleged to have also stolen a 2001 Chevy on Feb. 26 from the 1500 block of Stewart and a 1996 Volvo on March 1 from the 0-100 block of South Prospect Avenue.

Juvenile A, who is a resident of Park Ridge, was arrested March 6 after being reported missing by his parents and located by police. He was charged with three counts of possession of stolen motor vehicle, one count of possession of cannabis and fleeing from police.

A second suspect, identified as Juvenile B by police, was arrested March 7 after a resident in the 200 block of Ashland observed him and a third suspect attempting to burglarize a vehicle. Officers responded and were able to take Juvenile B into custody as he attempted to flee the scene.

Police said Juvenile B and Juvenile C had attempted to steal and burglarized a vehicle in the 700 block of North Prospect prior to the burglary on Ashland. After interviewing Juvenile B, he was charged with two counts of burglary to motor vehicle and fleeing from police. Juvenile B is a resident of Buffalo Grove and has pending possession of stolen motor vehicle charges in that village.

Juvenile C was arrested March 8 after being interviewed by detectives. He was charged with one count of possession of stolen motor vehicle, two counts of burglary to motor vehicle and fleeing from police, after he was observed in one of the stolen motor vehicles on March 5.

Police said all three juveniles have been petitioned to juvenile court.

A 79-year-old Niles woman died March 26, after she was accidentally struck by a vehicle being operated by her 13-year-old grandson.

Niles police said officers responded to a parking lot in the 9200 block of Maryland for reports that a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle.

Investigators learned that the victim, Kuem Cho, had given the keys to her 2005 Chrysler minivan to her grandson, who was assisting her place the vehicle into gear. Police said she was walking up to the open driver’s side door, when the teen shifted the vehicle into reverse and accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal. The vehicle backed up with the driver’s side door open, striking Cho.

The Niles Fire Department transported Cho to Lutheran General Hospital, where she died from her injuries.

The NORTAF – Major Crash Assistance Team was called into to assist in the investigation, and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating the cause of death.

A 14-year-old boy will be charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking, after police say he stole a car Wednesday with an elderly woman in the backseat.

The Park Ridge Police Department said officers were dispatched to a store in the 900 block of Touhy Avenue at approximately 6:50 p.m. March 23 for the report of a stolen vehicle. Victims told officers they had left their vehicle in the parking lot, while an 88-year-old family member remained in the car. When they returned to the parking lot, the victims noticed that their vehicle and the family member were gone.

“Officers immediately issued a flash message to surrounding law enforcement agencies,” Deputy Chief of Police Lou Jogmen said in a news release. “Officers learned that the victim was not in the vehicle and that the suspect had dropped the victim at her home.”

The department said investigators followed up on several leads that stemmed from recent motor vehicle arrests involving juveniles. While following up on one of those leads in the area of Belmont and Harlem in Chicago, investigators observed the stolen vehicle and sought assistance from area police departments.

The Chicago Police Department assisted Park Ridge detectives in stopping the vehicle in the 4800 block of North Austin and taking a 14-year-old suspect into custody. The boy was transferred into the custody of the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center.

Park Ridge detectives are continuing their investigation and consulting with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, which is expected to file one charge of aggravated vehicular hijacking against the suspect.

“The Park Ridge Police Department is pleased with the swift and positive resolution of this case,” Jogmen added. “The victim was located, unharmed, shortly into the investigation due to the excellent investigative work by detectives and our partnership and teamwork with the Chicago Police Department.”

While responding to the area to assist detectives, a Park Ridge police officer was involved in a minor crash with another vehicle several blocks from the traffic stop. The officer was transported to Resurrection Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and a passenger from the second vehicle was also transported with non-life threatening injuries. Chicago police cited the driver of the car for failure to yield and emergency vehicle.
