Bugle Staff

Romeoville police revived a 40-year-old man from what could have been a fatal heroin overdose.

The Romeoville Police Department said officers responded to the 1200 block of Pullman at about 5:15 p.m. May 5 for a call that a man was unresponsive. Upon arrival, the officers learned that the victim had just injected himself with heroin.

Officer Kyle Long began CPR, while officer Christopher Swiatek administered one dose of the  opioid antagonist Narcan (naloxone) to the victim. The victim started to show signs of reviving and officers continued CPR until the Romeoville Fire Department arrived.

Personnel from the fire department administered another dose of naloxone and the victim started breathing on his own.

The police department commended Long and Swiatek for their efforts, saying that the officers likely saved the victim’s life.

This incident comes days after a Will County event calling attention to the region’s heroin epidemic was held in Romeoville. With 20 confirmed overdose deaths linked to heroin or prescription opioids, the county is on pace to shatter its record of 53 heroin overdose deaths set in 2015 and 2012.

A Joliet man was sentenced to 12 years in prison after being found guilty of attempted first degree murder in the 2009 stabbing of his former girlfriend.

Circuit Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak sentenced Bradley Schlott, 48, on May 4. A jury found Schlott guilty in March.

According to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, Schlott brutally attacked his former girlfriend in the Joliet house they shared the morning of March 12, 2009.

During the attack, the victim convinced Schlott to call 911 by telling him she would say her injuries were the result of an accident. A physician testified at trial that she would have died had she not been treated.

“This was a savage attack by a weak and jealous man who lashed out when he felt he could no longer control his girlfriend,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said. “This courageous woman fought back and not only saved her own life, but she helped police and prosecutors put this monster behind bars.”

The Plainfield Police Department announced recently that Vanessa Hutchins was awarded the Civilian of Year Award for 2015 and Michael Fisher was awarded the Supervisor of the Year award for 2015.

Since joining the police department in August 2011, Hutchins has served as a part-time Courts Technician, before being promoted to Executive Assistant to the Community Service Division. 

According to the police department, no matter the position, Hutchins has always shown tremendous care, exemplary diligence and a kind heart. 

Hutchins never misses an opportunity to ask how someone is doing, and about their family, dogs, babies, grandkids, boyfriends, girlfriends or parents. She always shows interest in the welfare of the individual before attending to the business at hand. 

Hutchins brings this same sense of care and individual attention to her interaction with the public. Whether on the phone, or face-to-face, she is attentive to the person’s needs, considerate of their feelings and committed to assisting them with their problems. 

Hutchins also helps with department projects such as D.A.R.E. graduations, pool parties, dances, PEMA Awards Banquets and National Night Out. No matter the event, she has ideas to make each a special occasion for those involved.

According to a release from the department, Hutchins possesses that quality of seeing the best in people, and works hard to make us see it in ourselves. Greeting her fellow employees with a smile and a “Hello angel,” she brightens our workplace and spirits. 

Hutchins was given the award because the department said she is also one of the most diligent and thoughtful people when it comes to her work.   Fisher was hired as a police officer with the village of Plainfield on June 27, 1994.  During his 22 years of service, Sergeant Fisher has worked in several different capacities. Although most of his supervisory tenure has been spent as a Patrol Sergeant, Fisher has also been assigned as the Sergeant overseeing the School Resource and DARE officers. 

Currently, Fisher has several collateral responsibilities within the police department, which include: Public Information Officer, Juvenile Officer and Evidence Technician. Fisher has also been the police department’s Range Master and possesses an exuberant amount of knowledge pertaining to firearms. He also spent several years as a Gang Resistance Education and Training Instructor for the police department.    

During his career, Fisher has received several department awards, including a life-saving award in 2005. Fisher has also received several letters of recognition for the level of work he has performed, a few of which were handwritten letters of appreciation from different citizens.    

In 2015, Fisher was assigned as the day shift Patrol Sergeant. During that time, Fisher responded to several critical incidents and took immediate control of the scene and made several instant and effective decisions, which resulted in favorable outcomes.

A few of the most notable incidents were the suicidal subject with a firearm on James Street and an armed robbery assignment on Route 59.   

Fisher is described by his peers as a very knowledgeable and professional officer who always leads by example.

The department said his reputation for sound judgment and decision making skills are why he is often called upon to be the acting patrol commander.

A 28-year-old Bolingbrook woman who was working as a substitute teacher’s aide at a Villa Park high school has been arrested on charges of criminal sexual assault of a 16-year-old student.

The Willowbrook High School student told a school officer that they had sexual contact with Elyse V. Snyder at her home, according to the Bolingbrook Police Department. Bolingbrook police said the incidents reportedly occurred at the teacher aide’s residence, and that the victim and the offender admitted to having consensual sex on two occasions in April 2016.

Snyder has been charged with three counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault – a Class 1 felony – and two counts of criminal sexual abuse – a Class 2 felony.

Snyder has been transported and is currently being held in the Will County Adult Detention Facility.

The third of three men accused of robbing a Downers Grove Radio Shack in 2013 was sentenced to 18 years in prison, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

A jury found Brandon Jones, 22, of Woodridge, guilty on one count of armed robbery and one count of armed violence – both Class X felonies – earlier this year.

Prosecutors said Jones and an accomplice, Downers Grove resident Carlos Brown, 23, entered the Radio Shack located at 75th Street and Lemont Road at approximately 10:45 a.m. Dec. 11, 2013. A third man, BL Jones, 21, of Chicago, remained in the vehicle.

Once inside the store, Brandon Jones allegedly pulled out a loaded gun and pointed it at the store clerk. Jones and Brown then forced the clerk at gunpoint to open a cage containing cellular telephones and fill a bag with the phones before fleeing.

Through the help of witnesses, Downers Grove police officers were able to spot the vehicle on the road. After a chase, officers were able to stop the vehicle on Route 59 near Ferry Road, at which time Jones and Brown fled the vehicle. After a brief foot chase, Jones and Brown were taken into custody.

In August 2014, Brown entered a plea of guilty to one count of armed robbery and was sentenced to eighteen years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. In March 2015, BL Jones entered a guilty plea to one count of armed robbery and was sentenced to eight years.

Jones will be required to serve 50 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

A Joliet man was sentenced to life in prison for the 2014 stabbing of a 20-year-old woman inside the Evergreen Terrace apartment complex in Joliet.

Drumaine McKinley, 37, received the sentence May 17, according to a release from the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

In March, a jury found him guilty of fatally stabbing Joslyn Woods on the morning of Sept. 3, 2014, in the laundry room of a Joliet apartment building in the 300 block of Broadway.

Prosecutors said McKinley stabbed the young woman so many times that the pathologist who performed the autopsy could not accurately determine the number of wounds she suffered. The jury made an additional finding that the murder was brutal and heinous, making the defendant eligible for a life sentence.

Neither the victim nor McKinley residents of the apartment complex.

During the encounter, McKinley was captured on a security camera striking and slashing wildly at the frightened woman and then leaving her to die on the laundry room floor. The defendant exited the laundry room at one point, but he returned to stab her more times before his final departure at 6:32 a.m.

The defendant fled on foot to his mother’s house on Joliet’s East Side, discarding his bloody shirt and socks in trash cans along the way.

A police dog tracked the defendant from Cass and Ottawa Street, where his shirt was discovered, to Union Station where his socks were located, and finally to his mother’s house. When the canine unit arrived, other officers already had found McKinley hiding in a wooded area.
