Tina Jones

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Woodridge Chief of Police Brian Cunningham announced last week that bond was set at $250,000 for a Des Plaines woman accused of contracting a “dark-web” company to murder the wife of a man with whom she had an affair. Tina Jones, 31, is charged with one count of Solicitation of Murder for Hire, a Class X Felony.

On April 12 the Woodridge Police Department received a tip that a woman in Woodridge was the subject of an alleged murder for hire plot. An investigation into the matter, led by the Woodridge Police Department, resulted in last week’s charges. It is alleged that in January Jones paid the dark-web company more than $10,000 via bitcoin to have the woman murdered. Jones turned herself in to authorities April 17.

“The charge brought against Mrs. Jones is extremely serious,” Berlin said. “Any attempt, or perceived attempt, to bring physical harm to another individual will be met by the full force and effect of the law. I would like to thank the Woodridge Police Department for their outstanding work in identifying the suspect in this case as well as the Naperville Police Department for their assistance. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Adam Frahm for his work in securing the charges against Mrs. Jones.”

“I would like to thank the Naperville Police Department and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office for their assistance and guidance during this investigation,” Cunningham said. “In recent years, law enforcement has seen a dramatic increase in the use of the dark web as it relates to criminal activity. This case is a great example of how increased training, shared resources and interagency cooperation helped protect one of our residents.”

Jones’ next court appearance is scheduled for May 15 for arraignment in front of Judge George Bakalis. If convicted, she faces a minimum sentence of 20 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Additional conditions of Bond for Jones, should she post, include surrendering of her passport and no contact with the victim or her family.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Anthony Nemeth

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced May 1 that Judge Robert Miller sentenced Anthony Nemeth, 28, of Summit, to five and one-half years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for sexually abusing a 16-year-old female acquaintance. This afternoon, Nemeth appeared before Judge Miller where he entered a plea of guilty to one count of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse, a Class 2 Felony.

The sentence stems from allegations that in October 2017, Nemeth sexually abused the girl at a park in Downers Grove. The girl’s parents were alerted to the abuse and immediately contacted the Downers Grove Police Department who in turn contacted the DuPage County Children’s Center. Following an investigation into the matter, an arrest warrant was issued for Nemeth on March 1. On March 2, Nemeth appeared in Bond Court where bond was set at $250,000. He has been in custody since then.

“This afternoon, Mr. Nemeth learned that for sexually abusing a 16-year-old girl just to satisfy his sick sexual desires he will spend the next five-and-one-half years behind bars where he will be unable to prey upon innocent girls,” Berlin said. “I would like to thank the parents of the victim for bringing this matter to our attention as soon as they became aware of the situation. Thanks to their cooperation and the assistance of the Downers Grove Police Department, we were able to build a very strong case against Mr. Nemeth resulting in the prison sentence. I would like to thank the Downers Grove Police Department and the DuPage County Children’s Center for their work on this case. I would also like to thank Children’s Center investigator Cathy Hundley as well as Assistant State’s Attorney Lee Roupas for their efforts on this case and for their continued efforts in protecting society’s most vulnerable population from sexual predators such as Anthony Nemeth.”

Nemeth will be required to serve 50 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole. He will also be required to register as a sex offender for life.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Lisle Chief of Police David Anderson announced May 1 that a male Lisle High School student is now facing a Class 4 Felony charge of disorderly conduct for a threat he allegedly made directed at the school. The juvenile appeared at a detention hearing May 1 where Judge Michael Wolfe ordered that he be held in custody until at least his next court appearance, scheduled for Friday, May 4.

It is alleged that on April 30, the teen made threatening statements to his classmates. Authorities were made aware of the threats by the students and the teen was taken into custody the same day.

“Any threat made against the safety and security of students, teachers and school personnel will be taken very seriously,” Berlin said. “Recently, we have seen an uptick of this type of behavior and with that in mind we must all be vigilant in our efforts to ensure that students, teachers and other school personnel never fear for their safety while at school. I would like to commend the students who came forward to authorities with this information. It is because of their actions a possible tragedy may have been averted. I would like to thank authorities at Lisle High School for their cooperation in this matter as well as the Lisle Police Department for their work on this case. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Bethany Jackson for her efforts.”

“This case is yet another example of the outstanding cooperation between the State’s Attorney’s Office, the Lisle Police Department, the community and schools to keep our neighborhoods safe,” Anderson added.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Janitor, who secretly recorded girls in Crest Hill junior high locker room, gets maximum sentence

Ryan Thompson

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow announced that a former janitor at a Crest Hill junior high school was sentenced to five years in prison for making secret video recordings of adolescent girls in a locker room last year.

Ryan Thompson, 28, of Joliet, pleaded guilty in January to two counts of unauthorized video recording, a Class 3 Felony that carried a potential penalty ranging from probation to 2-5 years in prison.

Circuit Judge Dave Carlson handed down the maximum sentence on May 1, noting that a psycho-sexual evaluation of the defendant conducted after his guilty plea showed he had an above average risk of committing similar offenses in the future.

The defendant hid behind the closed door of a utility room and used a cellular telephone to secretly record the female victims between February and March of 2017. The four video recordings did not capture the girls while they were unclothed.

State’s Attorney Glasgow praised his prosecutor, Elizabeth Domagalla, with securing a guilty plea and sentence that takes Thompson off the streets.

“Assistant State’s Attorney Domagalla resourcefully utilized an extremely damning psycho-sexual evaluation to argue that a prison sentence was absolutely necessary in this case, even though the defendant had no criminal record,” State’s Attorney Glasgow said. “Judge Carlson heard her arguments and handed down the maximum sentence, noting that anything less would have deprecated the serious nature of this crime.”

Miguel Luna

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow announced Wednesday, May 16, that a man who raped three women on the I&M Canal path two years ago pleaded guilty to aggravated criminal sexual assault.

Miguel Luna, 37, faces between 32 and 80 years in prison when he is sentenced by Judge David Carlson on July 16.

Luna attacked the first victim between Brandon Road and Larkin Avenue on Sept. 6, 2015. In this case, Luna jumped off a bike, tackled the woman from behind, dragged her into the woods, and tied her up. He repeatedly sexually assaulting the victim during the more than 90 minutes he held her captive.

Another woman was attacked near the I&M Canal path in a similar manner around 8 a.m. on May 21, 2016 while she was running along the Frontage Road near Interstate 55. The defendant, who was wearing a ski mask, sunglasses, and surgical gloves, grabbed the victim from behind, put her into a chokehold, and tied her hands with shoelaces under the I-55 viaduct. He sexually assaulted her and left her tied under the viaduct . She was able to free herself.

In both cases, he indicated he was armed with a knife, but he never brandished one.

The suspect was identified during the investigation of a sexual assault of another woman that occurred on May 18, 2016. The defendant, who also knew this woman’s friend, tied up his victim and sexually assaulted her in a secluded area near Brandon Road. The victim’s friend later identified Luna for police.

After Luna was identified in connection with this case, his DNA would conclusively link him to the other two sexual assaults.

“Miguel Luna is in this country illegally. This ruthlessly violent sexual predator should never have had the opportunity to brutally prey upon these innocent young women,” State’s Attorney Glasgow said. “He terrorized our community by repeatedly committing the most vicious sexual assaults against unsuspecting women in an historic area that people from throughout the region safely enjoy for recreation.”

Luna was living in the 1400 block of Winifred Street in Joliet. Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Fillipitch secured the guilty plea.

Shorewood man gets 36 years for sexual assault of young girl

Thomas Holley

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow announced that a 60-year-old Shorewood man was sentenced May 17 to 36 years in prison for the repeated sexual assault of a young girl who would visit his home.

Thomas Holley pleaded guilty in January to one count of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault, a Class X Felony, and one count of Criminal Sexual Assault, a Class 1 Felony. The girl was 8 years old when Holley began abusing her.

Circuit Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes handed down the sentence.

The brave young girl told a friend about the abuse in 2015 and then made an outcry to her school social worker and her parents. She was interviewed at the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center, where she gave a detailed recorded statement of her abuse at the defendant’s hands and subsequently received counseling services and professional support during the prosecution of the criminal case.

During the execution of a search warrant at Holley’s home, police found cameras, computers, and portable hard drives that were used to record and store digital files of the defendant assaulting the child.

“This truly is one of the most horrific cases of child sexual abuse we have prosecuted in many years,” State’s Attorney Glasgow said. “Thomas Holley is a dangerously cruel predator who stole this brave little girl’s innocence. He also completely violated the trust of family members who had no idea of his vicious depravity.”

He continued: “It took tremendous courage for this girl to come forward and tell the truth about the abuse she suffered at his inimical hands. Because of her bravery, Thomas Holley will spend what should be the rest of his life in prison where he can never harm another innocent child.”

The State’s Attorney commended his prosecutor, Kelly Tebo, for securing this sentence, as well as his staff from the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center and his Victim Witness Services Division for their compassion and sensitivity in guiding this survivor and her family through the criminal justice process. The child and her family also relied on the services of Kiwi, a therapy/facility dog in State’s Attorney Glasgow’s Paws 4 Kids pet therapy program, who was available to comfort them throughout the process.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s prosecutors also assisted in this case, retrieving a video from his computers depicting the sexual abuse.
