A Joliet man was sentenced to 12 years in prison after being found guilty of attempted first degree murder in the 2009 stabbing of his former girlfriend.

Circuit Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak sentenced Bradley Schlott, 48, on May 4. A jury found Schlott guilty in March.

According to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, Schlott brutally attacked his former girlfriend in the Joliet house they shared the morning of March 12, 2009.

During the attack, the victim convinced Schlott to call 911 by telling him she would say her injuries were the result of an accident. A physician testified at trial that she would have died had she not been treated.

“This was a savage attack by a weak and jealous man who lashed out when he felt he could no longer control his girlfriend,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said. “This courageous woman fought back and not only saved her own life, but she helped police and prosecutors put this monster behind bars.”

The Plainfield Police Department announced recently that Vanessa Hutchins was awarded the Civilian of Year Award for 2015 and Michael Fisher was awarded the Supervisor of the Year award for 2015.

Since joining the police department in August 2011, Hutchins has served as a part-time Courts Technician, before being promoted to Executive Assistant to the Community Service Division.

According to the police department, no matter the position, Hutchins has always shown tremendous care, exemplary diligence and a kind heart.

Hutchins never misses an opportunity to ask how someone is doing, and about their family, dogs, babies, grandkids, boyfriends, girlfriends or parents. She always shows interest in the welfare of the individual before attending to the business at hand.

Hutchins brings this same sense of care and individual attention to her interaction with the public. Whether on the phone, or face-to-face, she is attentive to the person’s needs, considerate of their feelings and committed to assisting them with their problems.

Hutchins also helps with department projects such as D.A.R.E. graduations, pool parties, dances, PEMA Awards Banquets and National Night Out. No matter the event, she has ideas to make each a special occasion for those involved.

According to a release from the department, Hutchins possesses that quality of seeing the best in people, and works hard to make us see it in ourselves. Greeting her fellow employees with a smile and a “Hello angel,” she brightens our workplace and spirits.

Hutchins was given the award because the department said she is also one of the most diligent and thoughtful people when it comes to her work.   Fisher was hired as a police officer with the village of Plainfield on June 27, 1994.  During his 22 years of service, Sergeant Fisher has worked in several different capacities. Although most of his supervisory tenure has been spent as a Patrol Sergeant, Fisher has also been assigned as the Sergeant overseeing the School Resource and DARE officers.

Currently, Fisher has several collateral responsibilities within the police department, which include: Public Information Officer, Juvenile Officer and Evidence Technician. Fisher has also been the police department’s Range Master and possesses an exuberant amount of knowledge pertaining to firearms. He also spent several years as a Gang Resistance Education and Training Instructor for the police department.

During his career, Fisher has received several department awards, including a life-saving award in 2005. Fisher has also received several letters of recognition for the level of work he has performed, a few of which were handwritten letters of appreciation from different citizens.

In 2015, Fisher was assigned as the day shift Patrol Sergeant. During that time, Fisher responded to several critical incidents and took immediate control of the scene and made several instant and effective decisions, which resulted in favorable outcomes.

A few of the most notable incidents were the suicidal subject with a firearm on James Street and an armed robbery assignment on Route 59.

Fisher is described by his peers as a very knowledgeable and professional officer who always leads by example.

The department said his reputation for sound judgment and decision making skills are why he is often called upon to be the acting patrol commander.

Park Ridge police are investigating three incidents where moving vehicles had their windows shot out by a BB or similar projectile.

At approximately 7:44 p.m. June 7, Park Ridge police responded to the area of 600 N. Talcott Road for the report of a shattered car window. A 70-year-old female victim stated her driver’s side window shattered as she drove north in the 600 block of Talcott Road.

Officers observed a small hole in the window that the department said was likely caused by a BB or similar projectile. While on scene investigating the damage, two additional victims approached officers and stated that they also just had windows damaged on their vehicles.

A 44-year-old Park Ridge man advised that his rear passenger window shattered as he drove in the 2400 block of Talcott Road. The other, a 45-year-old Park Ridge man, stated that his rear passenger window was shattered as he drove north on Interstate 294 adjacent to the location of the first incident. No one was reported to be injured.

A witness reported seeing two male, white teens, one wearing a black shirt and holding what appeared to be a BB gun, running through the wooded area near the first incident. Police set up a perimeter, searched the area but were unable to locate any suspects.

For the time being, Park Ridge police recommend keeping car windows up when driving along the wooded area on the west side of the city to provide some added protection from potential projectiles.

2016-15674 hanna-ayyubNiles police announced Wednesday that a man from Des Plaines was arrested in connection with the sexual assault of a 17-year-old female Niles resident on June 10.

Prosecutors charged Ayyub Hanna, 19, with one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault and one count of unlawful restraint.

The Niles Police Department said the juvenile victim and her father reported the assault June 13. They told investigators that Hanna, who knew the victim, was driving the victim home in a 2009 Mitsubishi sports car on the night of the incident.

According to the department, Hanna parked the vehicle in the 7200 block of Lill Street, locked the doors of the car and took the victim’s cellphone, and struck her several times, before forcing her to perform a sex act. Police said Hanna implied to the victim that he had a knife.

“The offender took several photographs of the victim using his cellphone after the sex act was completed,” the police department said in a news release. “Later, the offender began sending text messages to the victim’s cellphone threatening to ‘blackmail’ her with the photographs.”

Police located Hanna at approximately 4 p.m. June 14 and took him into custody. He was interviewed, and the case was reviewed by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. The assistant state’s attorney approved charges of aggravated criminal sexual assault, a Class X felony, and unlawful restraint, a Class 4 felony.

Hanna is currently being held in the Cook County Jail without bond. He is scheduled to appear in court June 30 at 10:30 a.m.
