A Joliet man has been charged with several felonies, after Will County prosecutors say he sent a series of emails of a sexual nature to a Mokena boy and then traveled to meet the minor.

Paul Frank Hicks, 41, of the 700 block of North Raynor, was formally charged last week with indecent solicitation of a minor, traveling to meet a minor, grooming and possession of a controlled substance. He faces up to five years in prison if he is convicted.

Hicks was taken into custody Aug. 25, following an investigation by the Mokena Police Department and the Will County State’s Attorney’s High Technology Crimes Unit.

The investigation began after the child’s father discovered an email exchange between his son and the defendant. The two had connected via an advertisement that was posted on craigslist.

Charges allege that the defendant discussed sex with the boy and traveled to the boy’s house in Mokena to meet him for that purpose in the early-morning hours of July 7. The two met inside the defendant’s car, but the youth exited the vehicle without sexual contact having occurred. The charges also allege that the defendant knew through the email exchanges that the person he was going to meet was a child.

Investigators executed a search warrant on the defendant’s home, and took possession of his computer and other electronic devices. During the search, officers discovered a substance containing hydrocodone.

Hick’s bond was set at $200,000, with 10 percent necessary to secure his release while he is awaiting trial.

Lockport man gets 9 years for beating fiancé with brass knuckles

A Lockport man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for beating his fiancé while wearing brass knuckles, according to a press release from the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Robert Szymanski, 26, of the 1700 block of Hamilton, entered a blind plea of guilty to domestic battery-related charges on June 22. Associate Judge Edward Burmila handed down the nine-year sentence on Aug. 26.

Prosecutors said Szymanski became enraged at his fiancé after consuming alcohol and Xanax during the Jan. 16 incident. Szymanski allegedly threw the woman on the couch and began choking her with his hands, and then began punching her in the head and body while wearing brass knuckles.

At one point during the attack, the woman lost consciousness. Szymanski then looped his belt around her neck and began choking her with his belt after she awoke, according to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

She slipped out of the house and had a relative take her to the emergency room after he fell asleep. She reported the attack to Lockport police, and Szymanski was arrested.

The victim suffered a fractured hand and serious bruising about her neck, head and body.

Morton Grove police were called to the area of Mango and Cleveland Aug. 31 for the report of an armed robbery.

Officers determined that a female victim had her cellphone stolen at gunpoint, the police department said in release.

At approximately 9:55 p.m., a female caller reported that she had been robbed of her property at gunpoint.

The department said officers and detectives spoke with the victims and determined that the victims were walking in the area of Cleveland and Mango, when they were approached by three or four male subjects.

The subjects allegedly demanded keys and other property from the victims, while brandishing guns and knives, and one of the victims gave the men her cellphone.

The victims said they were then separated from each other, which is when one of them was able to scream for help.

The offenders fled the scene southbound on Major in a dark colored vehicle that was parked nearby.

The Morton Grove Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information to contact department at 847-663-3818.

A Chicago man was arrested in connection to an extensive illegal fencing operation that authorities say has ties to Downers Grove.

Juan P. Balbontin was charged with felony theft and continuing financial crimes enterprise in Cook County, according to a Downers Grove Police Department news release. The department began working with the Chicago Police Department and Cook County investigators in March, after police learned that items stolen from Downers Grove cosmetics retailer Ulta were being sold to a store owned by Balbontin.

Balbontin is the owner of JB Fragrances, a Chicago perfume store that authorities targeted as part of an undercover investigation into the purchasing and selling of stolen high-end fragrance products, purses and liquor.

Police say Balbontin purchased items he knew to be stolen in order to resell them at his store. Investigators confiscated more than 1,800 bottles of perfume from the store.

A Joliet man convicted of first-degree murder for fatally shooting another man in a crowded restaurant in 2013 has been sentenced to life in prison, according to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

In February, a jury found Christopher Thompson, 33, guilty of shooting Gerrardo Franchini nine times at point-blank range, while the victim was eating breakfast with his wife, 5-year-old daughter and 4-year-old niece at Louis’ Restaurant.

According to prosecutors, the two men had been involved in an ongoing dispute leading up to the incident. After walking into the restaurant and seeing Franchini, Thompson allegedly walked up to the booth and the men exchanged heated words.

Prosecutors said Thompson returned to the crowded restaurant 15 minutes later and opened fire on Franchini at close range. The victim suffered nine gunshot wounds to his face and body.

Despite efforts to conceal his face, Thompson was identified as the shooter by several eyewitnesses, including the victim’s wife.

On Sept. 7, Circuit Judge Dan Rozak handed down a life sentence, plus 60 years.

“Christopher Thompson committed a crime of unrivaled brutality, and he will never be free to walk our streets again,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said.
