Plainfield police made one drunk driving arrest during the recent Independence Day Crackdown, according to a release from the department.

An additional 15 seat belt citations and 12 citations for illegal use of electronic communication devices were written.

In 2014, one person was killed every 53 minutes in a drunk driving crash in the U.S. That means there were a total of 9,967 drunk driving fatalities that year.

Citing these numbers, the Plainfield Police Department said enforcement crackdowns are important because too many people are not heeding the dangers of drunk driving. Alcohol not only dangerously impairs driving skills, it impairs judgment.

“Anytime you see a friend drinking alcohol, make sure they don’t plan to drive home,” Plainfield police Sgt. Eric Munson said in a release.

Plainfield police joined forces with other law enforcement agencies and highway safety partners throughout the state in the Illinois Independence Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown. The crackdown was funded by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
